Avec ses alliés argiens, il veut prendre la ville de Thèbes d’assaut, et en devenir le roi. Tous deux meurent. Créon, le tyran de Thèbes, organise des funérailles honorables pour Etéocle, mais refuse un enterrement à Polynice. Selon Créon, c’est un traître et il mérite le sort des traîtres: sa dépouille doit être jetée à l’extérieur de la ville pour être dévorée par les chiens. Antigone enfreint les ordres de Créon et va enterrer son frère la nuit. Elle est condamnée à mort par Créon.
